It’s not typical to get a granite warranty when you buy a new stone top. Here’s the trick to negotiate a granite countertop guarantee . . .

Granite countertop fabricators don’t want to give one.  Most contractors of granite kitchen counter tops are small local companies that don’t represent a “branded” product or material.

Granite is a commodity and a natural product, unique from piece to piece. There are no large companies to stand behind it.  See Granite and Marble.

“Chamberlin Granite Co. LLC will repair or replace, at its option, without charge, the countertop if it fails due to any defect in manufacturing or installation by us. This warranty is valid for 20 years from the date of installation.”

Even though it’s not standard practice, some contractors will still provide you with a warranty for your granite countertops.

I have seen contractors provide warranties against breakage especially on countertops that are not typical – large overhangs, odd shapes, limited support – See Special Granite Support.

Protection for damage caused by normal use or neglect is not usually available.

Granite edges can chip . . . dropping heavy objects on tops can cause damage . . . thin strips of stone at sinks or cooktops can crack. A granite countertop warranty is probably only going to cover problems that seldom or never occur.

Quartz Countertops vs Granite

The quartz countertops industry, on the other hand, prides itself on long-term warranties. As usual, a quartz countertop warranty is for problems that won’t occur. The sales literature for one quartz countertop company, Silestone, states that you should not put hot objects on the counters . . . that knives SHOULDN’T leave a mark . . . and that bleach is recommended for stubborn stains (on a product that won’t stain and never needs sealer).  See Quartz Countertops vs Granite.

Things are not always as they appear. Especially in the sales and marketing of countertops.

Silestone, Cambria, CaesarStone and all the other quartz surface companies are able to offer a 10-year limited warranty on their countertops because they all use the same process to manufacture with consistent quality. The strong, dense nature of quartz tops also allows for greater overhangs than granite without fear of cracking or breaking.

On the other hand, granite has no national brands behind it and warranties are seldom offered.

How To Get A Granite Countertop Warranty

A  warranty on marble and granite may seem important, but usually it’s merely a sales tool. It’s more important to choose an accommodating contractor who will take care of any minor problem in the future as a measure of good business.
